About the Author

I was born in Savannah, Georgia, the hometown of my parents, Annelore and George Harrell.  I'm the oldest of five and grew up as an Army brat.  We lived in Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Hawaii and Germany.  My father retired in the late 70's after a long military career as the Army's Chief Judge for Europe, Asia, Africa, Panama, Puerto Rico and the Southeastern United States.  My mother, born Annelore Stelljes, is my father's opposite in many ways, except for their mutual love of reading.  My parents influenced me tremendously.  My father was my debate partner, and my personal encyclopedia. My mother was my artistic role model.  She was always dramatic - from her theatrically designed dinner parties to her exciting road trips --- and, she is still our driver when we go to concerts (from hard rock to opera).  Like me, she enjoys the thrill of stage acting, had her own television show and writes a weekly column in the local newspaper.  I have two sisters, Anne and Melanie and two brothers, Andrew "Boo" and Jonathan.  As children, we spent most summers with my grandparents Anna & Martin Stelljes on Myrtle Island.  My youngest brother Jonathan drowned when he was almost 3 and I was 13.  His death took our breath away as a family and all of us wrestled with the deep melancholy of that loss.  As a teenager in the late 60's and early 70's, I searched for meaning in the wild and restless environment of Fort Bragg, North Carolina (9th-11th grades) and Kailua, Oahu (senior year). We moved to Germany in 1972.  My family lived in Stuttgart and I lived in Munich, where I attended school for the next 2 1/2 years (University of Maryland).  Wanting to improve my German, I also studied at the University of Stuttgart before returning to the United States (Savannah, Georgia) in 1976. My Bachelor's degree is in Elementary Education with a double minor in Art and German from Armstrong State University. After graduating, I was hired by Marjorie Scardino as manager of the Georgia Gazette newspaper. (Pulitzer prize for editorial excellence in 1983).  Adam was born in 1982 and Claire was born in 1983.  Although I had given up "work" for motherhood, I was just as active.  I was president and founder of the League of Women Voters of the Bluffton Area, president of the Episcopal Church Women, Sunday school teacher and teen youth director.  I taught art classes to children and line dancing to both adults and children.  I hosted two programs every Monday evening for 3 years on a local TV station.  I spent 6 months as a disk jockey at the #1 station.  I taught aerobics for10 years.  I earned extra money with a typing service. I was an intern at the ABC station.  I was an actor in murder mystery dinner theater for 8 years.  I was a deputy registrar and poll manager. A friend of mine wrote and produced (in Atlanta) a play about my life (Married Women's Bridge Club). I played electric bass in a band named Blufftonia.  And, to satisfy my fierce desire to make an impact on the world (for the better) I wrote and illustrated Nellie Jelly and the Jelly Well, a book for children ages 2-6 and composed music & lyrics for the Nellie song (cd & story in each book). Forming Odditeas, Inc., I traveled to China and hired a printer in Hong Kong to produce 10,000 books. Now, 4 years later, less than 4,000 remain.  I live on Myrtle Island with my husband Nicholas Maxim and our german shepherd Patchouk.  My parents and sister Melanie (and family) also live on Myrtle Island.  Anne & her family live in Augusta, Georgia. My brother "Boo" and his family live in Bluffton. My two children Adam (23) and Claire (22) live in Bluffton, as well as my grandson, Taylor (5), who is, of course, a Nellie Jelly fan!
